The Daily Mirror, a London newspaper that mostly appeals to lads and social conservatives, actually says it better than I can. Ha! (And trust me, I never thought I’d be in agreement with The Mirror.)

Well, this is depressing. According to the pundits, GWB was not elected in because of security concerns, or because people felt he would be best for the economy. No, he was voted in because of “moral values”, which I believe is otherwise known as “fear of gay people”.
I see so many lefties doing some soul searching this morning: “What did we do wrong? Why did Kerry not reach the people? ” Now, admittedly I have the somewhat envious position of living in a country where homosexuals can marry and the Christian right can live by their beliefs, but right now it seems like the only answer is that these people cannot be reached. A move to the center (more center than the current DNC??) is not going to appease these people. Nothing short of forcing everyone to live by their own strict fundamentalist Christian rules is going to appease them. And a move to the left, while catering to my own whims — would that have increased the Kerry vote any? Was there really an army of lefties out there who refused to vote because Kerry wasn’t radical enough, four more years of Bush be damned? I don’t believe that.
So, here’s my unpleasant but real conclusion: Americans, half of you are mean and ignorant and perfectly happy that way. For those of you who are not, there are only two options: move to a country where you will be welcome, or pick a single issue (abortion, seperation of church and state, and gay rights will all become hot buttons) and throw all your time and money and incredible feelings of loss into that. If you choose to stay and fight, do not give an inch, do not ever back down, because they never will. They never will.
You have seen the enemy, my sad friends to the south, and unfortunately it is your own neighbours.
(For those of you who are not American, you might want to reconsider any professional and personal business you do with the country. I know this morning I have been finding Canadian and European alternatives to current US company contracts, and have been seriously reconsidering a vacation I had planned there in a few weeks. If you disagree with the Bush Doctrine and those who blindly follow it, do not let your money go to their theocracy. We cannot tell the United States what to do, but we can show them what WE will do in response.)
